Fading of the Light – the disappearance of Goddess only and women only ritual spaces over the last 30 years in Los Angeles

In the 1980’s and 90’s the Southern California area had a large and vibrant community of Goddess focused and women only circles and groups, especially those for lesbians. There were newsletters, gatherings and open circles everywhere. Since the millennium this seems to have declined and the public circles are mixed and male deities are more prominent. Is this an imbalance being redressed or is it the Pagan Community reflecting the more male focused and misogynistic world outside of Paganism?

I would like to explore this perceived decline of Dianic and Goddess centered spirituality using interviews and polling data to see if 1) the decline is real and 2) if it is, why this has happened or if it has just gone underground due to pressure from the outside pagan community.

The polling would be both of lesbians and Dianics and of outsiders to the community. I would also be interviewing long time participants (20 years or longer) on the differences between today’s community and the one of the 80’s. I would like to know if my perception is one that is shared among other long time participants in the community and if they feel their knowledge as Elders is being lost.

This is an extension of my presentation on Lesbophobia in the Pagan Community from last year.
