I seem to have stirred up a hornet’s nest over on FB with my posting about other planets not having Christianity with some friends. It started with a friend stating the Judeo-Christian god would work anywhere or words to that effect and they took offense when I said if I ran a planet I wouldn’t allow missionaries. At which point I was accused of not allowing my people to learn and that I was the one proselytizing.
I had to point out that it was fine if they read about it and that I was not proselytizing. I’m not proselytizing unless I go to your wall and insist my religion is the one, true and only way and you have to believe my way. However if my religion appears in my feed and you exercise your free will to comment on my page to defend your way then that is a whole different thing. I did not make you defend yourself.
I suspect when I post pagan ideas it makes people uncomfortable and it somehow questions their personal choices on religion, or being gay or whatever. I’m not. They have their opinions and I would never ask them to change, I’m simply expressing mine. That seems to disturb the ant hill. I don’t care if they believe in Jesus or the Cookie Monster or the BIG GREEN BANANA. My belief system should not affect how you run your life unless it makes them think and know that there are other valid belief systems and that having other belief systems is OK.
And I wouldn’t allow missionaries of any religion that would insist it is the one true and only way. That attitude on the part of all Judeo-Christian religions has caused more death and destruction that any thing else on this planet. If I could observe that history on your planet why would I even allow you on mine? If they gave me a Bible to read all it would take would be getting to the story of Joshua and Jericho to throw them off the planet.
Let’s see, their god says it’s okay to kill every man, woman and child in a city because he doesn’t like the way they believe so it’s wrong. More like it was sitting in the middle of the only arable land and water in the region and they wanted it so they took it.
Every society that has their own belief system has a religious/spiritual ecology of its own and it is formed by their geography and the nature of their people. Most people’s have some form of the Golden Rule. In other words, treat others how you want to be treated AND that you are personally responsible for your own actions. No one made you hurt another person. You did that all on your own. Bringing Christianity in with its insistence on duality and that asking forgiveness after that fact destroys societies.(See the Roman Empire, the insistence that people leave their families for a new religion is part of what destroyed Rome and there are several writers in Latin who back that up.) Suddenly the devil or the witch next door made you do evil not the fact that for some selfish reason of your own you did the action. If you knew it was wrong you shouldn’t do it and you knew it before you did it. Your intent was evil. The world doesn’t need the devil which by the way was a creation of the Middle Ages Catholic church and that concept of Satan did not exist before then.
I much prefer the pagan way: “What goes around comes around.” And if you’re Wiccan it rolls back around times three. If you stole something, you knew it wasn’t yours before and in a right society things should be taken from you, if you stole because you were hungry, you should have asked for the food in the first place and you might have been fed if you were willing to work for it.
In an extraterrestrial society, what if they had no concept of sin? Introducing that concept could bring down a society that didn’t have a god that punished sin and what would give any one the right or the arrogance to assume they could or should? All paths including no path, are viable and noble paths as long as you don’t harm any one except your self.
