A miniature holiday

This holiday is getting better and better. My only aunt and the only person left of her generation in the family is sick so my cousins have called off Christmas. I can understand but that means Christmas is my sister and me and even though we’re pagan. family traditions still count and to make it even better the day after Christmas is my sister’s birthday. She has to work at midnight tomorrow night on her birthday. It’s supposed to rain and she rides her bike to work. My birthday present to her is that I’m going to drive her to work so she is dry at least for one night. She had to be at work at 3 this morning when it was pouring down and because I had to get up for work at 6 she rode and got wet clear through. Merry Christmas.

A month ago I grabbed a frozen turkey breast on sale so at least we can have our turkey dinner with my sister’s yummy mashed potatoes. After work I’m going to go to Trader Joes’ and see what other fun stuff we can add to at least have a little Christmas cheer. We couldn’t afford a tree so we don’t have that and last week we had a LOTR extended DVD marathon and watched all the extras so we can’t do that again. Maybe a Disney movie marathon?

If it isn’t raining in the morning I want to go out to the wildlife refuge and see if the white pelicans are there. They are so beautiful and so endangered, it’s a treat to see them. That and they are humongous . They are taller than my waist. They are usually only there in December and January so there is a small window to see them.

Hopefully, the refuge will be open because they close it in the rain. A few years ago they didn’t close it in time and they had to rescue people by helicopter and it was on the national news. Now they close it early but I noticed it was open this morning after it rained all night so maybe it will be open tomorrow. Got to get out the mud boots.

So our holiday won’t have lots of family or traditions but maybe we can make new ones but I miss seeing my aunt and cousins. They’re all we have left from a huge family that used to sit at least 12 down to dinner and usually more. Bit sad, that is.

  1. We have white pelicans up here at the slough. The first time I saw them they were a ways off and I was confused about what bird I was looking at, as i am only used to seeing the brown ones at the beach. Quite beautiful and majestic birds. (brown or whit really)
